Translating a service record into a civilian application. Form 5 versus a civilian logbook, PIC time, terminal leave timing, Guard and Reserve schedules alongside an airline seniority number.

Started this because I spent four months guessing. If you are separating, the two questions that matter are how you count your time and when you start applying. Everything else is noise. Ask here and somebody who has done it will answer.

Class date confirmed, starting the week after terminal leave ends. Full timeline for anyone behind me: separation notice to class date was nine months, six weeks of that was rebuilding the logbook, and the rest was waiting. Start the logbook the day you decide, not the day you separate.

Not military myself, but I have flown with a lot of people who were, and here is the pattern. The ones who struggle are not short on stick skills, they are short on being one of two rather than the authority. Say that out loud in the interview and you will be ahead of most of the room.

Restricted ATP, in detail, because I got it wrong at first. Military time qualifies you at 750 total. You still need the ATP written and the CTP course, and the CTP is not cheap unless a carrier pays for it, which several will as part of a class date. Do not pay for it yourself before you have asked.

Two interview invites after rewriting the message field. Posting the before and after in case it helps somebody. Before: eleven years of service, various aircraft. After: 2,900 total, 1,800 PIC, 1,600 turbine PIC, C-17 aircraft commander. Same person, same record.

Cargo is worth a look for anybody separating and I never hear it mentioned. Pay tracks the passenger side, the schedules are more predictable than people assume, and heavy multi time translates directly. We are also perpetually hiring and nobody applies.

The logbook conversion, since three people have now asked me privately. I rebuilt mine from the form 5 into a civilian format by hand, line by line, over about six weeks. It is miserable and it is the single highest value thing I did. Recruiters will not do it for you and a spreadsheet dump is not a logbook.
