What an aircraft mechanic does

An aircraft mechanic — formally an aviation maintenance technician, and almost always called an A&P — inspects, repairs and returns aircraft to service. The work splits into scheduled maintenance (the inspection intervals every aircraft flies to), unscheduled defect rectification, and modification work: avionics installs, interior refurbishment, engine and component change.

Employers are airlines and their heavy-maintenance bases, Part 135 charter and cargo operators, corporate flight departments, repair stations and MROs, FBOs and line-service operations, flight schools, and manufacturers doing completions and warranty work. It is the largest single role on this board.

Airframe and Powerplant: what the two ratings mean

The FAA issues a mechanic certificate with two separate ratings. Airframe covers the structure, flight controls, landing gear, hydraulics and systems. Powerplant covers engines, propellers and their accessories. Holding both is what people mean by an A&P, and it is what most job postings ask for.

You can be certificated with just one. In practice a single rating narrows the roles open to you sharply, because signing off most line and base maintenance needs both.

How to become an A&P mechanic

There are two routes, and the regulation treats them as alternatives. The school route is an FAA-certificated aviation maintenance technician school under 14 CFR Part 147, which issues an authenticated graduation document. The experience route is documentary evidence of at least 18 months of practical experience appropriate to a single rating, or at least 30 months performing the duties of both the airframe and powerplant ratings concurrently (14 CFR 65.77).

Either route leads to the same tests: a written knowledge test, then an oral and a practical test demonstrating the knowledge, risk management and skill elements in the Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe and Powerplant Airmen Certification Standards (14 CFR 65.79). Military maintenance experience commonly counts toward the experience route.

What aircraft mechanic jobs pay

Pay on this board is shown per listing rather than as an average, because the spread is wide and driven by things an average hides: whether the role is line or base, shift and rotation (a 7-on/7-off or a weekend shift usually carries a premium), whether you hold an Inspection Authorization, avionics or NDT specialisation, and the local market. Review the employer's pay range, aircraft and required certificates where supplied; any occupational pay estimate is labelled separately.

Career paths from the A&P

Common moves are into inspection (an Inspection Authorization after the experience requirement), into a specialisation such as avionics, sheet metal, composites or non-destructive testing, into maintenance control and technical records, or into a lead, supervisor or director of maintenance seat. The certificate also opens roles at manufacturers and repair stations that never touch a flight line.
