Took on an apprentice this year and it has changed how I work. You cannot skip a step in front of somebody who is writing down what you do. Half the shortcuts I had built up over twenty years turned out to be things I could not justify out loud, so they are gone now. Teaching is a maintenance practice.

Every instructor discovers this. You do not really know a procedure until you have had to defend it to somebody with a notebook.
