I underwrite aircraft policies. The single biggest thing that moves a premium is not hours, it is recency and training in type. I have written good rates on a 400 hour pilot with recurrent training and refused a 3,000 hour pilot who had not flown the airplane in a year. Nobody believes me until renewal.

This matches what I see. Our premium moved more when we formalised recurrent training than when we hired experience.

As a 41 year old with 300 hours who assumed insurance would be the wall, this is the most encouraging thing I have read here.

It is not encouragement, it is loss data. Recent training in type is what shows up in the claims. Hours mostly do not.
