Chief Pilot
Location: Pennsylvania
Reports to: Director of Operations
Position Summary On behalf of our client, we are seeking a Chief Pilot to lead and oversee the Company's flight operations, management and training programs. This pilot is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and leadership of flight operations, with accountability for ensuring that all company flight activities conducted under the Part 135 Charter Certificate are conducted safely and in accordance with all applicable regulations. The Chief Pilot plays a critical role in ensuring that the flight department meets its safety management objectives.
This position has overall responsibility for supervision, leadership and operational oversight for all flight crews, pilot training, standardization, operating procedures, and safety initiatives, while actively supporting the Company's Safety Management System (SMS). As a key member of the management team, the Chief Pilot reports to the Director of Operations. Director of Maintenance, Safety Manager, and executive leadership will have consistent attendance and maintain a high standard of safety and compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Flight Operations Leadership • Organize, direct, supervise, and direct all flight operations conducted by the Company • Provide leadership and oversight of all flight department personnel • Exercise control over all operational control authority over the Pilot-in-Command as authorized by the FAA • Manage operational functions that directly impact operational control and flight safety • Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, safety, and operational excellence • Ensure all flight operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards
Pilot Training Management • Organize, administer, and oversee all pilot training programs • Ensure compliance with FAA-approved training requirements and company training standards • Coordinate initial, recurrent, upgrade, differences, and special-emphasis training • Maintain pilot qualification, certification, and training records • Ensure all pilots maintain current medical certificates and qualifications • Ensure all flight crew members maintain required qualifications and currency • Conduct or oversee line checks, standardization evaluations, and observations
Safety Management Systems (SMS) • Actively support and promote the company's Safety Management System • Ensure personnel under his or her authority actively participate in safety reporting • Investigate safety issues and hazards • Validate, investigate, and address identified safety risks and safety risk management deficiencies as they arise and effective measures • Participate in the implementation of risk mitigation measures identified through the Safety Management System • Participate in Safety Review Board meetings and safety committee meetings • Support the identification of hazards and voluntary safety reporting • Support analytical trending through analysis of safety reports, operational data, and trend monitoring
Flight Manuals and Standardization • Review, experience, and maintain aircraft checklists and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) • Ensure compliance with the General Operations Manual, Training Manual, SOPs, and company policies • Maintain consistency and standardization across all aircraft types and flight crews • Ensure flight crews remain informed of changes to regulations, operational procedures, and company standards
Regulatory Compliance • Ensure flight operations and related activities are conducted in compliance with: - FAA Regulations - Part 135 Charter Specifications - General Operating Manual (GOM) - Safety Management System requirements - Applicable industry standards and best practices - Company policies, procedures, and regulatory reviews - ARROW (if applicable) - Ensure corrective actions resulting from audits or inspections are completed effectively and on schedule
Operational Communications • Receive, review, and take appropriate action regarding aeronautical information affecting safety of flight operations • Ensure all pilots receive required information in flight crew and operational personnel • Ensure timely communication of changes to regulations, procedures, manual, notices, and other information • Serve as a liaison with external vendors, training providers, regulations, and organizations • Ensure they affect flight operations
Personnel Leadership and Welfare • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for flight personnel • Conduct performance evaluations and take necessary actions, and retention initiatives • Foster a positive and collaborative working environment • Support succession planning and long-term pilot development initiatives
Required Qualifications • Valid ATP Certificate or equivalent • Holds a valid Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate for the category of aircraft operated by the Company • Holds a valid First Class Medical Certificate (or better) • Qualified in accordance with the Company's approved training program to serve as Pilot-in-Command on at least one aircraft operated by the Company • Thorough knowledge of the Company General Operations Manual • Training Manual • Standard Operating Procedures • FAA Parts 91, 119, and 135 • Safety Management Systems (SMS) • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and crew resource management (CRM) Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
Preferred Qualifications • Previous FAA-approved Chief Pilot experience • Possess PC-24 type rating and operational experience • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) • Experience conducting pilot evaluations, line checks, and standardization programs • Bachelor's degree in Aviation, Business, Management, or a related field
Physical Requirements • Must perform duties as a required flight crewmember • Ability to maintain FAA medical certification requirements • Ability to travel as required • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with multiple interruptions and distractions • Ability to perform operational duties without undue fatigue or stress
Work Environment The Chief Pilot operates in a dynamic aviation environment that requires regular interaction with flight crews, management, customers, vendors, auditors, and regulators. This position requires flexibility and the ability to respond to changing needs and priorities beyond traditional business hours.
