What a flight attendant does

A flight attendant is a required crewmember with a safety job first and a service job second. The role covers pre-flight equipment and cabin checks, passenger briefings, securing the cabin, managing medical events and disruptive passengers, and running an evacuation. Service is what passengers see; emergency and security duties are what the position exists for and what the recurrent training tests.

Where flight attendant jobs exist

Two very different markets. At the airlines, staffing is set by regulation: one flight attendant for an airplane seating more than 9 but fewer than 51 passengers, two for more than 50 but fewer than 101, and two plus one more for every additional 50 seats above 100 (14 CFR 121.391). Crew size therefore scales with the fleet, and hiring runs in large classes.

The second market is corporate and charter. Part 135 operators must crew a flight attendant on aircraft with more than 19 passenger seats (14 CFR 135.107), and many business-jet operators carry one by choice on long-range aircraft. Corporate cabin roles are far fewer, hired one at a time rather than in classes, and usually ask for service experience, a valid passport and flexibility rather than seniority.

How to become a flight attendant

There is no licence to earn before you apply. You are hired first, then trained: airlines run their own FAA-approved initial training programme covering emergency procedures, aircraft-specific equipment, evacuation, first aid and security, and you hold a Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency once you complete it. That certificate is issued against the aircraft types you trained on.

What employers screen on instead is the baseline: minimum age (usually 18 to 21 depending on the operator), the legal right to work, a passport that permits international layovers, reach and height requirements tied to the cabin, and a background and drug screening. Customer-facing experience is the most common differentiator on an application, because the safety training is provided.

Airline versus corporate: which to aim at

Airline flying is seniority-driven. Schedule, base, aircraft and pay all improve with time in a way that is predictable, and the trade is that you have very little control over any of them early on. Reserve, commuting and junior-manning are the realities of the first years.

Corporate and charter cabin work is the opposite: no seniority ladder, far more schedule variability, more responsibility per trip (you are often the only cabin crewmember, and frequently arranging catering and logistics too), and pay that is negotiated per role rather than set by a contract.

What flight attendant jobs pay

Airline pay is usually a per-flight-hour rate against a contractual guarantee, with per diem for time away from base, so an advertised hourly figure is not a salary.
