Job Summary Composite Technicians report to the Director of Maintenance and are responsible to Aircraft Leads and Maintenance Supervisors. Must be certified per work package requirements to sign for work per customer processes and all applicable FARs/DFARs and applicable CFR Part 14 requirements. Responsible for fabrication of plastic aircraft parts, accessories, and trim in accordance with applicable maintenance manuals, FAA regulations, and company policies and procedures. Key Responsibilities • Research technical data and perform fabrication of plastic aircraft parts, accessories, and trim per maintenance manuals and FAA regulations • Cut fiberglass, Kevlar, or graphite cloth to size following templates or blueprints using cutting machine, scissors, or knife • Mark identifying information on material and assemble materials in kits for subsequent laminating • Apply parting agent to mold or bonding fixture • Impregnate cloth with resins by dipping cloth in solutions, feeding cloth between rollers to impregnating machine, or brushing resin onto cloth • Apply layers of impregnated cloth or prepreg onto mold or fixture in predetermined ply sequence, and press cloth to fit contours of mold, smooth surface, and remove air pockets and excess resin using squeegee, scraper, spatula, or roller • Fit and lap ends of cloth using scissors or knife • Encase molded laminate in bagging material and bleeder cloth, attach vacuum bagging apparatus such as thermocouples, probes, and vacuum connections to mold or bonding fixture, and exhaust air from vacuum bag to seal laminate for curing; test seal using leak detector • Trim, drill, deburr, grind, sand, and finish cured parts to specifications using templates, fixtures, hand tools, and power tools • Pre-fit and assemble cured parts into assemblies or subassemblies using jigs, fixtures, power tools, and fasteners such as rivets and bolts • Perform cold/hot metal bonding • Apply adhesives to surface of assembled parts for bonding in autoclave • Ensure proper documentation is made on training records for training received, signed by Lead, Supervisor, or Manager • Perform maintenance duties away from base on temporary duty • Perform maintenance work such as repair and maintenance of company equipment and shop housekeeping • Ensure all work is performed safely and direct activities to protect employees and maintain safe working conditions • Ability to pass FAA/DOT required drug and alcohol program including random testing as required by regulations
Requirements • Experience: Minimum 3 years aircraft composite fabrication/repair experience required. 5+ years preferred • Certification: Must be certified per work package requirements to sign for work per customer processes and all applicable FARs/DFARs and CFR Part 14 – Required • Required Skills: • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate in English • Proficient in composite layup, vacuum bagging, resin impregnation, and autoclave bonding processes • Experience cutting and handling fiberglass, Kevlar, graphite cloth and prepreg materials • Skilled with hand tools, power tools, templates, fixtures, and precision finishing of composite parts • Knowledge of cold/hot metal bonding and adhesive applications
• Other: • Must be able to pass FAA/DOT drug and alcohol program including random testing • Must be able to perform additional duties as assigned by Line Supervisor or Aircraft Lead
