Coming off heavy military multi and starting a type course soon. For anyone who has made this jump, how much does the course assume you already understand about the automation philosophy, as opposed to the systems?

The systems it teaches. The philosophy it assumes, and it should not. Ask your instructor on day one to say out loud what the airplane is designed to think.

I teach it explicitly in the box for that reason. Most of my sim failures trace back to somebody who learned the buttons without the intent.
